Cruise News Roundup 6.17.23

I’ve never had any issues with the food in Carnival’s Main Dining Room, but I am sure many will be pleased that the line is planning to roll out close to 60 new entrees in the next few months. The Carnival Dream will be the guinea pig for the new menu starting June 17 with changes rolling out fleet wide by fall. The culinary team has been working with Emeril Lagasse to create new dishes for the MDR as well as specialty restaurants. Expect larger portions on certain entrees along with additional vegetarian options.

I was actually asked just yesterday if I liked the food on cruise ships. A coworker had some friends of his say they didn’t like the food on their last cruise. I don’t know which line or ship they were on, but I know that there are people out there who complain about food on some cruise lines as being subpar, but I live in the middle of nowhere. The closest city of any size is an hour and a half away. Fancy food is not something I have regular access to even if I wanted to spend the money on it. There will always be some dishes I like better than others, but I don’t think I’ve ever not been able to eat a meal served on a cruise ship. I just hope Carnival doesn’t get rid of its famous chocolate melting cake!

Sir Richard Branson, billionaire owner of Virgin Voyages, is going to set sail on the Resilient lady for a 7-night, Virgin Celebration Voyage to depart Athens on August 27th. This special sailing will feature a range of exclusive events such as intimate fireside chats (which I assume with include Branson), special performances, culinary explorations and more.

Princess appears to be trying to gain more of the family-cruiser market with additions to its new ship, the Sun Princess set to debut next February. Park 19 will be a new family activity zone on their first Sphere-class ship. While Princess has been known as a line many multi-generational families enjoy, this new area will cater more to the younger members of those families.

Activities in Park 19 will include

  • the first roll glider on a cruise ship designed to use an overhead track where guests are seated and harnessed to an electric ride which reaches speeds of up to 11 mph during the 60- to 90-second experience with panoramic views.
  • A ropes course that covers two decks
  • A Splash zone – Which will definitely target families with younger children
  • The Net is an area made up of unstable bridges and a balance beam over giant nets.
  • A Recreational court with ping pong, shuffleboard and more.

John Padgett, Princess Cruises president stated that “The new area was tailored based on guest feedback for more family and group activities spaces.”

What do you think about the new direction Princess seems to be taking? Are you a fan of Princess cruises? If so, will this push towards families keep you off the Sun Princess and any other ship builds or refits doing the same? Comment below. I can image that there will be some who are loyal to Princess that might not be happy with this move.
